Mosaic Monday

Brand new listing in the shop today!

Mosaic Stained Glass Plate, Mosaic Plate, Moon and Sun Mosaic, Bohemian Art, Bohemian Decor, Hippie Art, Hippie Style, Mosaic Sun and Moon

Moon and Sun Mosaic Stained Glass Plate. Created on an old glass dish, the vibe for this moon and sun is definitely hippie inspired. Bohemian styled and in honor of my teenage years, growing up in the 60's and 70's, as a flower child in spirit. This plate is extremely groovy.

One of my absolute favorites to create in mosaic form, moons and suns always make me happy. Fits in anywhere within the home or even a small apartment. Perfect for someone just starting out and/or ready to retire. Appeals to all ages, young and old.

We love this style; we love the energy that comes with this design. We love creating moons and suns in mosaics! It is the middle ground between the light of the sun and the darkness of night, and thus often represents the realm between the conscious and the unconscious. The circular shape alone is a symbol of the never ending circle of life. Placing a half moon and half sun inside the circle supplies even more meaning. The sun is often recognized as a symbol of rebirth, strength and power.

Gift to someone for a birthday, as a Mother's Day or Father's Day gift, graduation, anniversary, wedding. Anyone who meditates and likes to sit peacefully focusing on an object can use this mosaic to help them go to a higher place within their mind.

Plate measures 10 inches and is a recycled dish given to me when I first moved to PA with my young children. It was used, loved and retired waiting for some mosaic magic. We're happy to share this with you!

In The Studio - Friday

It's been so much fun being as busy as I've been these past few months. The momentum should continue as I gear up for items to get listed in the Etsy shop as the months go on.

I had the great fortune to discover a "Call to Artists" recently on Facebook. A long time online friend who shares the love of mosaics is putting together a large mural for a wall in her area of AZ. She was looking for donations and I jumped at the opportunity to contribute! It's been a very long time since I've had the funds to do things like this. I'm thrilled!!

Mosaic sun design
I knew I'd make a sun; it is one of my favorite things to make. But recently when I draw them, they have the lotus flower leaves in them too. I seem to feel these designs take on a mind of their own. After all the sun would have been fine without the lotus leaves added. But I felt I should follow the muse and so together, we created this:

The arrow shown in the drawing was how I saw it when I first did it. But as things progressed, I saw the design was forming in a different way and felt this way was better. In the end, the trusted artist receiving this mosaic will know in which direction she should place it depending on where it goes on her wall.

While I was waiting for glue to arrive to do the sun, I did a quick switch plate cover.

I love these dish tiles so much that I decided once the sun was finished, I'd have to make a moon to go with it.

This too will be heading to AZ soon.

The best part of this whole experience is coming together with like-minded artists all over the world to help fill up that wall mural. I'll post some info later on as the wall begins to come together.

In The Studio - Friday

It has been a fairly productive week. Yesterday, I had one of the best days I've had in a long time. The humidity didn't slow me down as I did what needed to be done. I thought I'd share how it went through photos and captions. Enjoy!

Sunrise through storm clouds.

Baby having a nap and yes, she tucks herself in.
Finished getting glass on the purple candle holder.
Made a birthday card for my 2nd child who is turning 30 soon. Yikes!
Moon switch plate - sold after being listed for 1 day!
Sun switch plate - sold to the same customer who bought the above also only after being listed for 1 day!
Sunset ... what a perfect day!

In The Studio - Wednesday

I'm back playing with glass and grout this week after a long absence and it feels great!!

I started off the week with some grouting. Getting the Custom Ordered Celestial Set grouted was a wonderful feeling. I have touch ups still to do on these, a little more grout here and there, a little more cleaning. But they are looking really good.

Starting with the stars, I added my fav "Starry Night" grout to each one.

It's always so much fun to completely cover the tessarae up and then slowly clean off the grout to see it shine once more.

After these were finished, it was time to tackle the sides of the sun and moon. The moon was easy but the sun ... really the opposite.

Cleaning off the tiles around the sies of the sun was very challenging. I used cotton swabs at one point to get the grout cleaned off a little bit in the small areas where my tools and fingers just wouldn't go. It was worth it, however. Just look at that shine!

I got the "M" grouted for my grandson and gifted it to him for his 9th birthday. He loves it!

I have another custom order to start next for the same customer who ordered the celestial set.

The name "Michael" is completely cut out now and I'll share the progress of how it's going on Friday. The light wasn't with me yesterday afternoon so I couldn't get a good photo.

I'll also be back at it this morning with more grouting. It might take each morning this week to get all the grouting finished of things I've got waiting in the pile, but I'm okay with that.

I'll be doing a "Super Secret Mosaics Lab" project this weekend. Can't share that until the mosaic has been gifted (within the next month) but I'll definitely share it.

In The Studio - Friday

As promised, I have more to share from In The Studio this week. I've noticed 2 weeks in a month are very productive, the rest of the month requires some thought for new projects, allowing the muse to slumber a bit and to generate a renewed energy that I need to create.

I used some odd pieces from the cutouts I had leftover from the Celestial set I made and created an "M" and a funky looking crescent moon.

"M" is for my grandson, Malachi and stands 3-1/2 inches.

Funky looking 9 inch crescent moon but I love it!

After a few days, I decided to tile around the edges of each shape. The "M" has a colorful array of tiles, the moon is surrounded by blue.

I also continued work on the custom order and got tiles on the moon and sun.

Now they all need to be grouted, including the 5 stars I've got. The custom order won't be headed out to its new home for a bit but they will be ready to go when the time comes to ship them out.

I created a donation piece for a collaboration which I cannot share here just yet. I call this working in the "Super Secret Mosaics Lab". As soon as I am able, I'll share what I made, why, etc. It should be toward the beginning of September, possibly.

I put some mosaic magic on 2 small pots, 3 inches high. I wanted to keep them as a set but the stained glass supply right now is dwindling and I didn't have enough in orange to do both. The designs are the same on both, the swirl is on 2 sides, the other 2 sides have a wavy line which I'll share another time.

What a productive week! Look for a few of these items to be listed once I get them grouted and their photos taken. Woo-hoo!

In The Studio - Wednesday

I didn't really have much going on last week, so I just let the entire week go by without blogging.

This week, I have a good amount to share and will split these posts up into two like I used to. So it all works out, good for me and for those who like to see what's happening In The Studio.

The stained glass plate I was working on in the last post is finished and glue is slowly drying.

My goodness I love this mosaic so much. I'm really excited with how it turned out and once grouted, I will list it but won't be sad if it, like so many other mosaics I make, stay with me for a good long time.

The custom work is just about finished. I grouted the sun and moon and then after the fact, decided I wanted to put tiles on the sides. I am now waiting for those to arrive and will continue on them when they do. And the sides will get grouted after the tiles are placed on them. Double the work for me, but the end results will be awesome. Always worth it.

The stars weren't grouted when I decided to add something to the sides. These stars were given gold and silver mirror and I think they look much better. They are waiting for grout now.

I have a few more things to share but will hold off and post them on Friday.

Until then, do something fun and creative and enjoy the moments!

In The Studio - Wednesday

In between spending time with the family, I have managed to get some mosaic work completed too. It's a slower pace during the summer months, and having the Little Dude home every day with me is a lot of fun.

The celestial set is in the "to be grouted" pile.

I used stained glass in dark blue and various iridescent glass. I really do enjoy making celestial mosaics a lot.

I've started on a new mosaic. This is a discarded microwave plate (the last one in stock!) and carries over with the celestial theme.

I took a doodle I did last year that wasn't in very good shape (ink smeared, some of the drawings were off by a whole lot) and cut it out and taped it to the bottom underside of the plate. I can't do the specific details from my drawing because they are too small, but I can use them as a guide.

There's not a lot of planning here, just going with the flow and using the doodles as a guide. The flowers will no doubt become stars. The rays of the sun are probably going to get another color added to them.

And have no fear, once the doodle is no longer needed here for the plate, I will save it and use it for a mixed media project with paper or add it to something else at some point in the future. It's uses are endless!

In The Studio - Wednesday

Wowie, am I busy this week! The muse is in full swing and I am working on the custom celestial set. This set is fast becoming one of my favorite projects. What do you think?

This was the hardest one to cut out mostly because of my arthritic fingers.

Crescent moon and sun measure 8-9 inches.

stars

Celestial set
A treatment of grout/glue/water was added to the back and sides for added strength and aesthetics.
Same treatment on the back and sides of the stars.
The fun part!

In the sun, this beauty shines.

Late at night, lamplight, I had to get a picture of it when finished and awaiting grout.
Messy from glue, it's still gorgeous in sunlight. Now in the "to be grouted" pile.

Started this moon right after I finished the sun in the evening.

Continued into the late evening working on this. Tiny pieces of stained glass were cut to fit.

With each crescent moon that I create, if it fits in this space, I have to document it in this way. It's a tradition!
Time to start on the stars!
