Mosaic Monday

It's all about dishes this Mosaic Monday!

Over the years I've put hand cut stained glass, mirror and dish tiles on old plates from microwave ones to much beloved but very scratched dinner plates making them mosaic art.

Just walking around my room I found enough examples to take photos and share here. Check it out!

Dinner plate - I still use the other I was given for daily use.

Salad plate - I still use the other one of this as well.

Glass-on-glass mosaic plate. Really regret the grout choice here. It's actually a very light brown but is too light for the pastel colors I used in glass here. Black would have been the better choice. I might eventually regrout in black.

Same glass-on-glass mosaic plate in the window. The only way to really see the lily and water is in a window or with a strong light behind it.

This is an oldie but goodie. Was retired from Etsy a few years ago and now lives me with.

Same plate as above in the window. I love glass-on-glass mosaics for this very reason.

Tiny bowls with a little mosaic design in them. I have a lot of these little bowls in my stash just waiting for mosaic inspiration.

These three plates above (2 microwave and one dinner plate) are all listed on Etsy under Stained Glass Plates. Head over there to see more photos if you're interested.

Enjoy the journey.

Tesserae Tuesday - Scrap Glass Mosaics

As many of you might already know, I LOVE scrap glass mosaics. Taking tiny pieces of glass is something I like to do anyway but putting them altogether in a cool way makes me really happy. The results look great when used on glass-on-glass projects but just as cool on MDF. Below are just a few of my scrap glass mosaics I've done over the years. All are in private collections or have been sold.

Throwback Thursday

A favorite mosaic, now long gone, was an old wooden framed window I put scrap glass on. This took about 6 weeks to make from start to finish in 2014.

I remember grouting took a few days. I don't have a clue how big it was, but it almost entirely fit in the big windows I had in the bedroom.

Close-ups were the best part. Seeing the light come through it in the afternoons was a joy.

I've made window privacy panels, smaller versions, using this style and I love them. At the moment I have 3 that need repairs. That should get added to the list of things to do so I can enjoy them once more.

Throwback Thursday

Sold in 2018, this is an abstract stained glass mosaic made using photographs I took of leaves throughout the fall season from my favorite tree in the apartment complex I once lived in. I taped them all together and placed it on the bottom of the plate and added stained glass colors representing the colors of the leaves; following the color scheme more than the actual shapes of leaves and trees.

No matter how you turn this piece of art, it completely changes perspective. Honestly, no matter how it's placed, it is quite beautiful. Stained glass colors used are all the colors you find in nature during the fall season. I hand cut every piece of glass in this mosaic.

I love making mosaics on discarded items; transforming them into something beautiful and unusual. Such is the case for this mosaic. Very small hand cut pieces of stained glass were placed on a discarded 15 inch microwave plate and grouted, creating a work of art.

Tesserae Tuesday

This is a glass-on-glass project that will head to Etsy once grouted. Here, I'm sharing some work-in-progress photos and the final mosaic in the pre-grout stage. Because it's glass-on-glass or GOG as we like to call it, the glue will dry slowly.

I always used a PVA glue which goes on white but dries clear. I prefer this glue, mostly because it's economical but also because it lets me know when it's time to grout. Once the areas are free of white spots, it's time.

Using a pattern I drew and taping it to the back of this 13 inch glass plate, I was ready to start gluing down the stained glass. I picked jewel tones in light blue, many shades in green, dark blue in two shades and three shades of yellow.

Filling in around the design was a lot of fun. This glass was gifted; it's 3 or 4 layers of Youghiogheny Stipple (I believe). Beautiful colors swirl throughout the sheets and cutting it up into small pieces for my use made it really interesting. You will see, even before grout, the way the light plays throughout this mosaic.

Mosaic plate ready for grout and kitty approved!
This plate is so rich in color. Earth tones around the outside, jewel tones within. I truly love the combination of colors. It gives me that bohemian style feeling that I love so much.

The highlighted area shows spots of white glue which means it's not yet ready for grout.

Look for the finished mosaic on my website in a week or so.

Mosaic Monday

A good example of my favorite mosaics to create is included here in my blog post today. I love using discarded items and creating something new with them. Giving new life to them is one of the best feelings in the world. This glass mosaic plate was once a useful microwave plate used every day to cook and/or heat up food being fed to a family with love. The love continues in a new way here with this mosaic.

The photos show the process of creating this mosaic using photos I had taken of my favorite tree's colorful leaves. You can see the work-in-progress before the mosaic was completely finished as well as the final results.

This plate is meant to be shown in sunlight. I have been known to call these plates suncatchers, but traditionally suncatchers are hung in the window. My plates are heavy and hanging is not recommended nor do I craft them for that purpose at the moment. They look fantastic sitting in the window in a display dish holder (not included).
