Mosaic Monday

Happy Labor Day Weekend! As the four day weekend is a goof-off and relax time for us here (my Grandson's birthday is tomorrow!), I haven't been in the Purple Palace to continue working on anything mosaic. However, there are always things to share on the website (which has been updated and is finally ready for viewing!). This is one of my favorite mosaics I've made. I love the way I did it (acrylic paint, dish tiles, tempered and stained glass) and the colors too. So much love went into this bird mosaic. A true celebration of nature and love. Way cool. 😁 So here we go.

At the heart of this mosaic is a beautifully detailed bird, delicately perched amidst a radiant sun. The sun itself is crafted in vibrant hues of orange, iridescent white, and rich yellow, creating a mesmerizing display that dances with light. The bird, fashioned from a finely detailed dish adorned with graceful vines, adds a touch of nature's elegance.

What truly sets this piece apart is the charming heart incorporated into the bird’s design—a symbol of love and connection that draws the eye and the heart. Surrounding this radiant sun are layers of shimmering acrylic in bold yellows and glistening gold glitter, all protected beneath a sleek sheet of tempered glass for durability and a polished finish.

Each creation is lovingly signed with my signature peace sign and dated on the back, ensuring your artwork is unique and infused with a personal touch.

EarthMotherMosaics on Etsy

This week's shout out and shameless promotion: Jewel of the Night Sky - Crescent Moon Mosaic. These are popular items for my customers.

There are two crescent moons this size available in my shop. There's a good possibility they will be the last ones made by me for quite some time.

To those who own an EarthMotherMosaics Crescent Moon, congratulations! I hope you enjoy it for years to come. To those who gifted them, I truly wish it was received well. If you are hopeful I'll be making more ... that remains to be seen. As I grow older, my hands don't respond well to the repetitive motion it takes to cut the glass and mirror on big pieces like these. However, I never say never! I can't say for sure I'll be making more this year but I also can't say I won't. I just don't know yet.

In any case, enjoy the photos and check out my shop to see other mosaics if this one doesn't interest you. There's something for everyone!

Mosaic Monday - Abstract Modern Mosaic

Mosaic Stained Glass Wall Art in tangerine, metallic rust and orange sherbet stained glass. I have named this one "Back To Basics". At the time I created it, in April 2010, I wanted to make some art that was fairly simple in design but had a large visual impact. I believe this 8 inch wall hanging expresses what I wanted to achieve very well.

You should keep this one for yourself but if you must, gift it to the very best person you know who would love mosaic art as much as we do. Makes a wonderful wedding gift, anniversary present, birthday gift, retirement present.

Can be hung in any room, with almost any color decor and design as depicted in the photos I share here. This is meant to stand out and fit in, all at the same time.

Measures 8 inches, has a D-ring which is hanging hardware attached and is signed and dated. Wooden frame was handcrafted by my father who was in his mid-70's at the time.

Indoor use only.

$70.00 USD - FREE SHIPPING (USA ONLY)

Mosaic Monday - Crescent Moon Mosaic

Lavender Moon. It's hard to capture the beauty of this hand mixed lavender grout I used for this moon in photos but if I do say so myself the entire mosaic is absolutely luscious in person. The white iridescent glass sparkles in different hues ranging from yellow to purple, green and blue, the silver mirror grabs the light, dish pieces from my blue and white stash add the perfect blending. Topped off by small black iridescent glass circles and the lavender grout. It's awesome!!

Perfect for a birthday, wedding, anniversary, housewarming, holiday. Anyone who loves purple, blue and white AND celestial designs will absolutely LOVE this crescent moon.

Gift to a special someone or save it for yourself. As long as it's enjoyed, it's job is done.

My signature, a peace sign charm, has been added. A felt pad has been attached so the back will not scratch your walls. Signed and dated.

Indoor use only.

Measures 12 inches high

WIP Wednesday - Swirling Moon - Ready for Grout!

I'm pretty happy with the results of this mosaic. It's in the grout pile and should be grouted at some point over the weekend.

When the sun was shining as I worked on this, the iridescent colors in the glass came through very nicely.

This is one of those mosaics that looks so much better in person. Hopefully I'll get photos when I list it that will do it justice.

I'll share it again when it's listed. Isn't it pretty?!

Mosaic Monday - Mid Century Modern Mosaic Wall Art

Mid Century Modern Mosaic Wall Art

Materials: stained glass, dish tiles

Dimensions: Height: 7 Inches; Width: 16 Inches

This Mid Century Modern Mosaic Wall Art has a history to it. The base is a wooden trivet, made by my Father in the late 1950's, early 1960’s. The design was just starting to become known and adored and he and a friend sold many of these in NYC. The band around the top handle is real leather and the wood was cut using a lathe, sanded down and stained by my Dad. A few years ago he handed me 5 of these beauties and asked if I could use them for mosaics. The first one I made is mine to keep but a few I've decided to sell.

Done in all hand cut blue stained glass in varying degrees of color, the center section has 4 hand cut flowers from a favorite set of dishes I like to use in my mosaics. My Dad has whittled small feet on the bottom to protect the surface of either a wall or table.

Hang on the wall, use as a candle trivet; it's up to you how you display this unusual piece of handmade artisans work. But please display it proudly!

Makes a great gift for an anniversary, wedding, new home owner, apartment dweller, college bound student, birthday, retirement and the list goes on.

Keep it and gift yourself. I absolutely believe you will smile each time you see it.

Not recommended for food or oven use. Indoor use only.

Measures 16 inches x 7 inches.

$80.00 USD - FREE SHIPPING (USA ONLY)

WIP Wednesday - Mosaic Crescent Moon

I'm considering calling this one Azure Moon. Not very original I guess but I think it describes it well.

This is where I left it when I took a break. Starting back up was really not difficult after resting for a while. The unfinished areas were completed within an hour.

I'm very pleased with how it looks. I'm considering my grout color choices. Until it is clear what to use, I won't grout it. Black is always a choice when I can't decide, but I have white and some purple and blue colorants. I also have a light beige color I could use. I think any light color will break up the darker spots in this so making the right decision is crucial. Perhaps I'll use the purple or I could use grey. As you can see, I have to make up my mind but it's still resting, so I don't have to decide right now. When the time comes, it'll be the perfect choice!

WIP Wednesday

Yesterday I mentioned I'd be filling in this sun with yellow glass. I've since changed my mind. I'll be using orange instead. It seems to flow better for me. I like to think that the eye follows a certain pattern, color or shape. In this instance, it seems to blend better with orange.

No worries. The yellow will definitely get used in something else.

Here is the final choices for this sun. The small brown glass dots, iridescent brown and tan and orange. I like it!

Honestly yesterday was a little too warm for me to work at the table. I am sure once summer arrives for good, I'll get used to it, but it was slightly uncomfortable in my space until the sun disappeared from the sky. I might have to start working at night, which I can do easily enough. And yes, I DO have an air conditioner in and running. It wasn't even as hot as it gets during the summer, but it was warmer than I'm used to, so I took the day to acclimate.

More fun to come as the weeks go on. It's always fun being an artist in the attic! :)

Tesserae Tuesday

I started working on a mosaic yesterday. After doing some fixing up and rephotographing a few mosaics I've had listed on Etsy, I decided I needed to do something new. I needed something semi-quick because complicated isn't where my head is at this time. What's better than a mosaic sun?!

A few of the bags were put away and not used for this sun, but I will say the colors I've chosen are making me happy so far and the design just flowed from head to hand to sun.

I love iridescent glass. The sparkle and shine that happens when light hits it, is remarkable. The only color not yet added is the yellow which will go in the spaces near the ball chain. This will be a quick one and will be ready for the "to be grouted" pile by the end of the week.

I'll share more tomorrow for WIP Wednesday.

Tesserae Tuesday

The Dreams of a Peaceful Forest is featured on this Tesserae Tuesday because of the tess I used to create it. And also, I just sold this piece so I thought it would be a nice send off to feature it here.

SOLD!
I've named this mosaic wall: The Dreams of a Peaceful Forest. Imagine if trees had dreams when winter starts its dance.

Filled with interesting tidbits of this and that, mostly dish pieces I've hand cut. A broken pin of a cat angel and a large peace sign charm started the ball rolling with this one.

The whole mosaic measures 9 inches. The mosaic itself is approximately 5.5 x 6.5 inches.

I usually use dishes for abstract work but once in a while I like to create a piece of art. That was the case here. Dishes all hand cut, a fairly large ceramic disc and a ceramic peace sign, plus a broken angel cat pin all told me they wanted to be used for this mosaic. I had no set plan when I started this piece. Sometimes it's best to just go for it!

I'm thrilled it was recently purchased. It's always a joy to share the love of mosaics with someone new.

Tesserae Tuesday

Last week, I shared some of my favorite tesserae. I use so many different things, I decided to break it up into two posts.

I left off with: My favorite tesserae is whatever I'm using at the moment. I love dish tiles when I'm using them as much as I love stained glass when I'm using it. Mirror is a favorite as well.

Dish Tiles:
"Cactus Joe" - a birthday gift for a good friend
Spring-themed decorative birdhouse using dishes, an old flower brooch and some Mardi Gras beads
Recycled:

An old jug found at a thrift store using hand cut mirror and stained glass
Broken Mirror:

Stained glass, dish tiles and mirror were used for this wedding gift
Tempered/Crash Glass:

Tempered glass or crash glass as some call it was used on top of colorful foils. I added glitter. This was the start of a beautiful friendship using tempered glass, paint and glitter. The love continues to grow to this day.
As you can see by these examples, there are so many ways to create mosaics. I've had some fail horribly but most of the time, when I experiment, I am usually pleased with the results. This particular piece of art isn't a mosaic but was an experiment. It's called "A Dreamer's Fleeting Moments" and is done with tempered glass, beads, found objects, mixed media, paper, pens, paint and glitter.

The best part about this: it's done on a piece of Styrofoam that came out of a packing box. I covered it in many layers of thinset (cement).
