Friday - Bits and Pieces

Wrapping up another fun week of mostly artful things. There's a lot to share. I'll show you what's happened this week. 

Doodles on painted papers

The red roses are gone but the orange ones are still beautiful. Those are my favorite!

Using my glue gun I spent some time putting designs on empty rolls sturdy enough to handle being pushed around. This turned out to be my favorite stencil.

Again the same stencil but paint was pretty much gone from the Gelli plate when I did this one. It's still going to be used at some point.

Friday - Bits and Pieces

Bits and Pieces really does fit well as a title. Rounding out a week filled with: a lot of art, thoughts of art, looking back on art I've made. So ... art.

I gifted my Grandson his piece of art on Wednesday, his 18th birthday. He loved it. Even though this motorcycle didn't have a long life, it's being used to learn how to fix them mostly and he has a special place in his heart for this machine. And now has something else for his wall to add to the many handmade gifts I've given him over the years. As you can see in the photo of him opening it (I used painted papers to wrap it up in) he said "Cool!" as he saw it. Yay!🥳

In a previous post or two I've mentioned the painted paper sheets I glued together then cut down to use in my journals and on cards. I was looking at them and decided to lay them all down to have a look. The first photo they are on my table.

Some of these will go into journals but a few might get cut into strips (the longer ones especially) and used in some awesome way.

What's really nifty, to me anyway, is all of these pieces were once individual painted papers. Gluing them together and then cutting them down creates a new piece of art. The last batch I did, I didn't draw doodles or add paint to them like I had with the other sheets I made. I was tired when I put glued the sheet together and in the morning I'd cut it before remembering I wasn't really finished with it. After looking at the smaller pieces once they were cut out, I didn't like them as much. They were boring. I actually love the grungy look of a wild pencil or paintbrush or tons of squiggly lines within the art, stamps, ink, circles, stencils, etc. And so I learned something about how to approach these sheets and will take that with me when I make the next sheet. Possibly today. And I reminded myself to never underestimate the power of writing a note! If I had put a note near the large sheet I'd made, to draw doodles, etc on it, that would have saved me from looking at these pieces as "less than". However, they each can get doodles, paint and so on, on them and will become just as I like them.

Meanwhile, very little work has been done on the mosaics I have waiting patiently for me in the Purple Palace. I did a little bit on the piece sign yesterday. It's almost filled in with glass and ready to sit in the "to be grouted" pile.

This weekend we'll be celebrating my Grandson at a party and next week I have an eye exam to test for glaucoma. I'm fairly sure I have it (all of my family on my Mom's side has had it) and when I had the last eye exam recently, they suggested I go to a specialist for testing. Keep good vibes coming. I'm truly grateful for the eyesight that helps me see and create art. Hopefully I'll be able to continue for quite some time to come.

Friday - My Grandson's Birthday Gift

It's that time again, when I wanted to make something for my Grandson's birthday. Each year, to date, it's been a mosaic. I'm fairly sure I want to try one for him for Christmas but for his birthday, I used collage papers and acrylics.

From a printout of a photo his Mom took, I traced with carbon paper and used acrylics.

It probably could have just gone like this onto the board and been acceptable, but I wanted more interest and I definitely had a lot of painted papers, so I glued down a few layers.

The original background of Malachi in orange made the motorcycle disappear, so I decided to cut it out and I used the pieces in a journal page. The papers I glued, once dry, needed a little love note to him. He won't be able to read it now. I know it's there.

Here's the final piece, ready to gift and hang. I love it and really hope he will too.

Tesserae Tuesday

This star box is kind of cool because of all of the different techniques I used, so I thought I'd share. I made this in February of 2013 as a gift.

Here, I used dish tiles, stained glass, mirror and a ceramic heart. And I used acrylic paint and glitter too on this star box. Wish I had more of these boxes. They aren't easy to find. Ironically enough, I call them "Wish Upon's". Putting a special wish inside the box after writing it down or even whispering into it and closing it tight, I like to think it holds our wishes until we've received them. Magical!!

I painted the top and used a clear purple glass that looks blue and purple depending on the light with mirror around the heart in the center. The bottom has purple and gold dish tiles. All hand cut to fit, of course. One piece of glass I showed in the first photo was not used. But I never know when I start where I'll go, so having more than I'll use is always a good thing.

Once the grout was dry, I painted glitter on the top using a water wash of glue. The heart can be used as a handle of sorts, to open the box.

I gifted this to one of my step-granddaughters for her birthday. I'm pretty sure she no longer has it as they've moved quite a few times over the years, but I like to think she got some use out of it and enjoyed it a little.

In The Studio - Wednesday

What a great birthday week I had! The best part is, it continues as the weekend approaches. This weekend we'll be having a gathering of family for lots of foods and good times. I'm really looking forward to it!

I was gifted with a fantastic bottle of wine on Friday (my official birthday). This is Apothic Inferno and it's delicious! Limited addition, aged in whiskey barrels for 60 days, it has that smooth sensation as it goes down just like whiskey. I'm not a huge fan of whiskey but I am a huge fan of red wine and Apothic. I completely enjoyed it. It's been added to the list the next time I get my wine order within the next few days!! Woo-hoo!

I gifted myself and got an additional vinyl wall decal to go with this one that my daughter and I put up on my wall recently.

This one is over my door and what I see as I leave the attic each day to visit with my family "below deck" as I like to say.

Meanwhile, I have been at the mosaics table now and then in between the heat we've been having here in Bucks County, PA. Nobody tells Mother Nature what to do, so we'll just wait for her to decide to cool things off a bit.

I've started on the next candle holder and I'm loving how it's looking already. A blue moon with a purple night sky along with drifting white clouds. Neat-oh!

Each candle holder so far has been completely different. I love that! This is number three and once it is ready to be grouted, I'll grout the other two as well and get them listed as I continue to work on the last three I am listing. Fun stuff!!

In The Studio - Part One

It's been busy In The Studio but very secretive, so I can't share mosaics I'm working on. But Little Dude and I worked on his birthday gift to give his Mom this week.

He loves making mosaics and we like spending time together. He's requested we collaborate on a big mosaic and I think that's a great idea. Over the summer I think since we both have time, we will do some creating.

Not so long ago I mentioned getting new drawing supplies and I've been sharing doodles here, there and everywhere I go. I have to admit my attention is directed towards doodling because it helps me forget about the pain my body is feeling for a little while. This is a good thing!

I got some gelly roll pens and black artist tile paper this week using money from a recent mosaic sale through Clairporium and have found I really like using black paper a lot. It reminds me of the dot painted bottles and shapes I've done on a much smaller scale (6 inches).
