Mosaic Monday - Wine Bottle Mosaic Art

Materials: dish tiles, ball chain, empty wine bottle

Dimensions: Height: 13 Inches

One of my empty wine bottles has become a piece of beautiful mosaic art!

The flowers and vines climb around the bottle from the neck to the base. Done in all dish tiles, hand cut to fit, I've made something headed for the recycling bin into a piece of nifty art. The neck has some ball chain wrapped around it, topped with 3 blue pieces of square glass tiles and a flower from the dishes used on the very top. My signature peace sign has been included.

Gift it, keep it, but please enjoy it. I love taking objects headed for the recycling bin or dumpster and turning it into a mosaic.

Would make a great retirement gift, wedding gift, birthday gift, or a just because gift.

Measures 13 inches high.

Indoor use only.

$55.00 USD - FREE SHIPPING (USA ONLY)

Throwback Thursday

A favorite mosaic, now long gone, was an old wooden framed window I put scrap glass on. This took about 6 weeks to make from start to finish in 2014.

I remember grouting took a few days. I don't have a clue how big it was, but it almost entirely fit in the big windows I had in the bedroom.

Close-ups were the best part. Seeing the light come through it in the afternoons was a joy.

I've made window privacy panels, smaller versions, using this style and I love them. At the moment I have 3 that need repairs. That should get added to the list of things to do so I can enjoy them once more.

Tesserae Tuesday

Here is the scrap glass wine bottle, now resting, waiting for grout. That won't happen until all the glue under the glass pieces is dry. Since it's been damp and raining a lot these days, it might take a while.

I'm running low on black grout but I have enough to mix with white to make gray. That's a good color for this bottle as most of the glass used is a soft color combination.

Mosaic Monday From The Studio

Greetings and Happy Summer!! It's been a little over a month since I've added a post; I've decided it might be a good idea to post once a week or even twice a month during the busy times. That would be now!

I've listed quite a few new mosaics on Etsy. Here's a glimpse of a few items. Hop on over to my shop to see more!

Peace Sign Mosaic
Cat Mosaic Wall Hanging

Abstract Flower Wall Art

At the work table, the magic continues to flow. I think my favorite project was the wine bottle turned into a groovy cat. The work-in-progress are the first 4 photos.

The 5th photo, of the lotus flower, shows the review I received on Etsy about it. I'm over the moon thrilled with her reaction to it. I actually got to give it to her in person, a first for me! I've sold mosaics on Etsy for years and this was the first time someone local or nearby found my art first, then discovered we were not only in the same state, but about 45 minutes away in distance. She stopped by on Father's Day on the way towards an event she was doing with her Dad and picked it up. And, as you can see by the review, loved it!

Number six in the collage shows the ever growing pile to be grouted! I've added two more to it since that photo, as shown in photos 7 and 8.

I'm going to be working on a scrap glass candle holder mosaic next. Then I'll get to the messy grouting party I'm going to have getting everything done, photographed and listed. Once each are done and ready for their close-ups, I'll share here and on my Facebook Page.

Have a great week and remember to enjoy the moments!

Let's Go Shopping!

Mosaic Bowl, Stained Glass, Mosaic, Glass Tiles, Orange, Light Brown, Tan, Blue, Bowl, For The Home, Housewarming, Great Gift-7 x 2.5 Inches - $50.00 USD

I've added some mosaic magic to an old discarded ceramic serving bowl. Simple designs in orange, amber and brown in glass and ceramic tiles cover the inside giving it an updated look.

I'm very proud of creating useful art. Here's a great example of how to recycle and reuse something. By recycling this bowl I've conserved valuable natural resources and saved something that would otherwise be buried in a landfill.

Give this as a wedding gift, offering the happy couple a sustainable gift as you hope their union will be. This should last for years if cared for properly. Add it to any room in your home. It can be used to hold stuff and things but remember it is first and foremost a piece of art.

Set it in the center of a table to make a statement. Place it at the door to let your friends and family see it the very minute they enter your home. Make a statement and always consider buying from an artisan. Support handmade.

Decorative purposes only. Not for long term storage for food or liquids. To clean this bowl you can run it under warm water with mild soap if necessary and wipe out with a damp sponge. Do NOT use harsh chemicals. Do NOT place in dishwasher or submerge in water.

This awesome bowl measures 2.5 inches high and 7 inches wide.

In The Studio - Wednesday

I've been standing at the table a lot this week, nipping up dish tiles for the next project.

A few weeks ago, my coffeemaker stopped working. I was very sad and told it how much I appreciated all it's hard work as I unplugged it for the last time. RIP coffeemaker. But now ... it's too large to just toss and as always I like to find new ways to use old items, so why not do something with these pieces?

I haven't yet started on the actual coffeemaker, but I am planning on putting some mosaic magic all over it soon enough!

Right now, I'm working on the aluminum pot. Gotta say, what I see in my head for this when it's finished getting some mosaic goodness, is kind of cool. Sometimes the muse takes me in a different direction from where I start out, so we'll see how it goes.

I drew a simple design on this but might just ignore it and go for it, glue and slap any old which way!

As you can see at the top, in the background, 2 candle holders and a switch plate are resting/drying, waiting for grout. Meanwhile, I'm nipping up all kinds of dish pieces. Fun stuff!

In The Studio - Wednesday

How is everyone's week going so far? Mine?? Well ... it's been all about the fam. The g-kids have had Monday and Tuesday off this week, so this old lady has had very little time to actually do mosaic work or any artwork at all yet this week. We also adopted another kitty and although I'd love to share a photo of her, I can't yet get her to pose for me. She's very unsure about her new home but she's met everyone but me a few times before she arrived, so she's doing pretty well. We still have an old lady cat who isn't at all concerned with the new kid, but will give her heck if she doesn't stop growling at her after a few minutes. They will figure out the dynamics and eventually it will get all settled.

But, because I dedicate this post to studio news, I thought I'd share a few photos I've taken of new things I've found or have been given to use for mosaics.

First up are a few really cool old perfume and liquor bottles along with a large vase. One person says it's recycling or even garbage, this person says: how cool would that look with stained glass or other neat-o things glued to it?!

My daughter gave me an old cake pan and I promised myself I'd figure out what to do with it. After some thinking on it, I decided to add rays which resulted from cutting out some shapes recently using Wedi board.

The rays will be challenging to work on. Not so much the flat bits but the sides (in blue) which is harder to cover with glass, tiles, etc. I might cover both sides with glass and paint the exposed sides (once more, in blue) instead of trying to tile/grout them. This is going to be fun to work on!

I finished up the "Ghost House" getting a hanger on it. I have to say every darned time I look at it, I smile. I think it's so cute. Will NOT be listing this, but if somebody wants to purchase it, let me know. It's one of those whimsical pieces I made thinking I would list it but I sort of fell in love with the goofy face I made on it!

The white spots, other than the grout, are actually white glass. It's got purple, orange and black dish shards and shiny orange ceramics from an old flower pot on it too. Fun!!

And last, a personal struggle for me. To try to turn a family foot stool into something fun and awesome. I didn't get a good shot of them, but the bottom part of the "feet" are in pretty bad shape; splintered and pieces of wood are broken off. This was made by a family member in shop class. In pencil on the underside is written "1961" but I'm not sure if that's when it was made or when it was initially repaired. My Dad, who works with antiques and restores furniture, worked on it a little bit. He gave it to me when my kids were little for them to use, keeping it with me from apartment to apartment over the years.

I really believe I could make it happy once more although the wood looks really awesome on top. Well-weathered and what many work hard to recreate when working with reproductions in wood. However, for me, a nice flat piece of "real" wood with legs means I need to cover it with a design in glass and dishes. Well, not really, I do know some things are better left alone, really I do. But this belongs to me and although I'm fairly sure no one will care, I want to make sure I do a decent job with it, make it awesome/cool/terrific. My grandson said I should make a tree on it but then said putting two glass feet on it would be cool too. I like the way he thinks! So stay turned, because I'm not sure when the muse will decide it's time to work on these many little things here, but I do know once she's ready, I'll share photos as we go!

In The Studio - Wednesday

Grouting happened this weekend! Yay!

Mandala Plate - 10 inches

White Moon Plate - 7 inches

Really happy with how the mandala turned out. Unfortunately a chunk of white grout came off of the moon plate, so I'll have to re-grout that over the weekend.

I am going to list these both soon. The moon later than the mandala.

And finally these great plates have gotten some cool photos taken and edited. These too will go in the shops.

I've named this one "Evening Moon Over Water" - 10 inch plate

Mr. Owl - 6.5 inches
Peace Sign - 6.5 inches
Pink Flower - 6.5 inches

For those interested, the 10 inch plates are $60. The 7 inch plates are $45 and the 6.5 inch plates are $38. If you're interested in purchasing them now before they are listed, comment below or send me an email any time.

In The Studio - Wednesday

It's been a little slower than usual this week but I'm still having fun.

A friend recently gave me some glasses (drug store "readers") because they no longer used them and they thought I might need them. At the moment, I'm good with glasses, I've got many pair floating around to help me with my mosaics and computer work. One pair, in particular, were scratched and not the right strength for me in any case. Well, there's nothing much else to do with things like that except to make them into art.

They aren't yet grouted (I'll share a photo of them when they are) but I took these old readers and made them into "sun glasses".

I always say I can never just toss things out without first looking at it and thinking: "would this work as a mosaic?" Almost everything can be turned to a mosaic. That's the best part about mosaics. We can put them everywhere, on everything. And I do my best to follow the rule: recycle, reuse, re-purpose.

I'm working on plates this week. They go quickly and I'm fairly sure the entire collection I had pulled out to work on will be finished in a weeks' time.

Monday evening I worked on Mr. Owl. Isn't he cool? He's resting in the "to be grouted" pile.

In The Studio - Friday

The studio is a little less busy now that the donated mosaic is on it's way toward the silent auction in in a few weeks. It was picked up by the very sweet chairperson who asked if she could give me a hug for donating. I never say no to a hug!

I managed to get a few new mosaics listed on both Storenvy and Aftcra. Aftcra has a few items added to it each week that are already in Storenvy plus new things too. Eventually both shops will have the same items. This may seem redundant to most, but sharing on different online shops means different online customers. That's never a bad thing.

This week I was approached by possibly a new customer and a new large custom order who found me through Storenvy. Just like when I had an Etsy shop, people are finding me for their custom order needs. I love that it's starting to happen now that Storenvy has been open for a few years. More on that commission as it develops, if it does. Fingers crossed! The time-frame for it will be closer to late in the summer, so keep checking back to see what's new!

While I was resting yesterday, I did a few odds and ends. It's not uncommon for me to do small touch-ups or finishing touches on days when the muse needs to rest.

These are 2 of the newest small crosses. They are 4 inches and too big to call ornaments but the right size to call them small wall art. Now grouted and have unusual hooks on the back. All I need to do is add a string for hanging.

I used interesting bails on the back; they are from clothes pins. When Little Dude and I made snowflakes by taking apart clothes pins, painting them white and sprinkling them with glitter for holiday gifts 2 years ago, I was left with all the spring-like mechanisms from the pins.

I never throw much away that might be used for some art project in the future and these were no exception. Each pin has a spring in order for the pin to open and close. I ended up with 20+ of these springs and no clue what to do with them but knew I couldn't throw them away. I can always recycle, re-purpose, reuse!

Here, I've used them as a bail gluing them down with resin to make sure they stay put and I'll add a nice piece of twine to each one for hanging.

Being uninspired to start new mosaics isn't always a bad thing. Sometimes I just need to wait for the ideas to come flowing through but that requires patience and lots of down time. However, this plate was sitting next to me and I decided last night I had to finish it up and put it in the "to be grouted" pile of plates I've done so far.

NOW I can rest over the weekend!
