This Mid Century Modern Mosaic Wall Art has a history to it. The base is a wooden trivet, made by my Father in the late 1950's, early 1960's. The design was just starting to become known and adored and he and a friend sold many of these in NYC. The band around the top handle is real leather and the wood was cut using a lathe, sanded down and stained by my Dad. A few years ago he handed me 5 of these beauties and asked if I could use them for mosaics. The first one I made is mine to keep but a few I've decided to sell.

 

 

Done in all hand cut stained glass in brown and black and copper mirror, the center section has 2 hand cut sunflowers from a broken mug. My Dad has whittled small feet on the bottom to protect the surface of either a wall or table.

Hang on the wall, use as a candle trivet; it's up to you how you display this unusual piece of handmade artisans work. But please display it proudly!

 

 

Makes a great gift for an anniversary, wedding, new home owner, apartment dweller, college bound student, birthday, retirement and the list goes on.

Keep it and gift yourself. I absolutely believe you will smile each time you see it.

Not recommended for food or oven use.

Tesserae Tuesday

Last week I mentioned I'd be sharing Christmas gifts I've made for the next few weeks. The last 2 are on their way to their destination now. That means I can share them here when the time comes. I'm sharing them in the order I made them in.

The next one I made was this mandala.

Taking 3 different patterns (one of my own) and combining them, I created a really cool mandala. I wasn't sure how I'd get all the glass and circles on them. I knew this was a good start.

Adding ball chain and broken necklace pieces, stained glass, mirror, ceramic nano tiles and glass rod pieces, I started on the journey that was one of the most intense I've taken in quite some time.

Small pieces of glass and mirror required tweezers and a steady hand. This wasn't something I could zip through quickly.

I'll let the rest of this post speak for itself through photographs. What a wonderful journey this was.

The friends I gifted it with really love it. I am looking forward to making something like this again soon. Maybe on a glass plate, maybe like this one, on a board and framed. I have to say I loved the experience and felt I learned that although the original design was kind of lost, it didn't take away from the final results at all.

Mosaic Monday

This mosaic stained glass plate is what we call "Red Hot!".

These colors placed together remind me of the leaves on my favorite tree in the autumn season. When the sun shines through this, as in all my mosaic glass-on-glass items, it is incredible. Make this a focal point in your home on a bright sunny shelf in the kitchen. Add it to a gloomy room in your home that could use a bit of spice!

All hand cut glass in red, orange and yellow were placed in this plate. It's been grouted and sealed.

This plate is meant to be shown in sunlight. I used to call these plates sun catchers, but traditionally sun catchers are hung in the window to grab the light. My plates are heavy and hanging is not recommended nor do I craft them for that purpose. They look fantastic sitting in the window in a display dish holder.

Stained Glass Mosaic

 What a beautiful mosaic this is. I've hand cut stained glass and mirror and made a flower design. Stained glass in hues of red, orange, light brown and yellow were hand cut into a beautiful flower. A small pewter cabochon flower in the center and silver mirror are placed in this too. Bright and becoming. Cadmium orange acrylic was painted on the bottom and sides. Round feet on the bottom to lift it up off the surface.

Place this in the center of a table with a candle on it for the best ambience you can get during any evening. The glass and mirror sparkle and shine as the candle flickers. It's a beautiful thing. Placed in a sunny spot on a windowsill or side table will give the room a warm and inviting feel to it. When the sun hits my mosaics, almost always there's a light show of some sort. I use mirror for that purpose. Give the reflections a chance to calm you as you watch them dance on the walls around you.

This is one of those mosaic pieces of art that really needs to be seen in person to give the full beauty of it, but my photos have done what they can to convey the look. A pretty vase of flowers or a nice bit of greenery placed on or next to this would look wonderful but it is amazing all by itself. Truly one unique piece of mosaic art.

This would make a great gift for anyone in your life. Treat yourself and give the gift of handmade mosaic art. Make it the focal point in a room or place it near a lamp or window in a room to give it a bit of a decorative uplift.

A New Horizon - Mosaic Stained Glass Plate

The title of this is "A New Horizon". Imagine standing toward the edge of a cliff where you see grass, hills, water, sand and rocks. It's a new beginning, a fresh start. An inspiration to begin again in one 12 inch mosaic stained glass plate.

When turned, it completely changes perspective. No matter how it's placed, it is quite beautiful.

Stained glass was all hand cut for this mosaic. The glass colors used are green/yellow, amber, white/light blue and aquamarine.

I love making mosaics on discarded items; transforming them into something beautiful and unusual. Such is the case for this mosaic. Very small hand cut pieces of stained glass were placed on a discarded 12 inch microwave plate and grouted, creating a work of art.

 
This plate is meant to be shown in sunlight. I have been known to call these plates suncatchers, but traditionally suncatchers are hung in the window. My plates are heavy and hanging is not recommended nor do I craft them for that purpose at the moment. They look fantastic sitting in the window in a display dish holder (not included).
