In The Studio - Part One

It's mid-week already of the first week in August. Summer is almost through for another year. This year's celebrated seasons have been clouded with illness and physical limitations, so I am hoping for a smoother transition into fall. It's not looking good, however.

I've been having some computer problems this week. It's a good computer, and I thank everyone again for contributing to its funding so I could purchase it a few years ago. I've taken good care of it and have been grateful every day for the convenience to be able to visit my friends all throughout the world many times a day. It looks like there may be another computer in my future soon, but in the meantime, I'll post when I can each week.

I did some grouting on Monday and am thrilled with the results. It's odd to many that grout gives me the satisfaction that it does for my mosaics. Many say I should try to make a few without it to see how liberating that can feel. It changes the look of the mosaic and many artists never use grout at all. I like it; I don't think I'd like any of my mosaics without it. Even when I try to leave it ungrouted, ultimately, I grout! Alright, I'm heading off my wobbling soapbox now about the benefits of grouting my mosaics to share some photos of grouted items and some that just made it to the pile to be grouted.

This peace sign is done in scrap glass. It's 10 inches round and is headed towards my Storenvy shop at some point today. I love making mosaics in scrap glass ... I guess it's the most fun I have when I create a mosaic because I never know what tesserae I'll be using or where it will be placed. I love to go with the flow! This has a tremendous amount of glass and mirror on it and is so very colorful!! I LOVELOVELOVE IT!!

Next, is the hot air balloon wall art. This makes me smile. I think the small pieces of iridescent mirror really makes this mosaic. Measures 6.5 x 9 inches and has a D-ring on the back, sides and back painted black.

For the first time, I took an original photo, "Spring Blossom", and glued it to a small piece of Wediboard. Then I added stained glass and beads to it. It didn't turn out exactly as I had hoped, but once grout is applied to the glass, I'm assuming it will look a little more like a tree with blossoms. I really liked doing this and I hope to keep learning what works and what doesn't with this technique. Thanks to an online buddy for sharing her step-by-step way of doing this. She adds glitter, paint and different photos together and then clear glass mostly to show off the work under it. Similar to what I do with tempered glass. I thought I'd start by using stained glass to see if I liked how it looked. But you know I'll have to try the glitter and paint way too! I put some resin over the beads and hope the grout won't destroy them completely in color and shine. The resin should help a little bit. I hope.

Taking one of the Wediboard cut outs I did a while ago shaped like a dress form, I embellished it with paper, mesh and plaster cast strips and created a really cool looking dress. This only measures about 5 inches and is going to look really awesome when finished. The back area that is not covered in dish tiles will be painted.

One 4 inch square of MDF and two small wall hangings made from Wediboard were added to the grouting pile this week. They can be worked on quickly and when I am having trouble sleeping and don't want to doodle, these shapes come in really handy! Out of the 3, I dig the flower the most. Flower Power, Baby!!

All will eventually be added to the online store but if you are interested in purchasing anything through me directly, just let me know.

Considering I've had a bad physical week and a wonky computer, I'd say I've done a pretty decent job of keeping the mosaic muse happy!

In The Studio - Part 1

I took the Suns and Moons Birdhouse out for a walk over the weekend and got some really fantastic photographs. My favorite is the "HOME" side against the tree.

Each side is completely different than the next so that no matter which way it is turned, nothing is lost. I added a peace sign charm to the chimney as a finishing touch.

This stands 23 inches high. The front and back are 6 inches wide and the sides are 4.5 inches wide. Done completely in pique assiette on wood. This mosaic piece of art is available for purchase. Contact me for pricing and shipping info.

I don't know if many missed me last week, but I lost my internet connection on October 17th, Friday morning and didn't get connected again until late Thursday afternoon on October 23rd. The forced break was put to good use. I primed a LOT of pieces of wood and MDF so that when the muse is ready to get creative, I don't have to slow her down with prep work, it's finished!

This is one of 3 similar piles ... the trouble is figuring out where to start!
But I also ended up with a bad stomach virus which laid me flat for close to 6 days. If there is ever a good time to have no distractions, that week was a good one for me.

In the time I was away, I made some decisions about my future adventures with my mosaics and photography business. Taking time to create is becoming more important to me than doing the business end. I know promoting is necessary and I'll still share my adventures on my blog, Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr and Google+ as usual. Nothing much will change except how I sell my mosaics.

My photography can be seen on fineartamerica.com and society6.com and I'll promote those a little more as time goes on. I have a Facebook Page dedicated to photography - if you give it a "like" and set up for notifications, you won't miss the latest news.

Work began on a small mosaic wall art from one of the piles shown above. This cool peace mug is coming along fairly well.

In The Studio - Part 2

The birdhouse is finished! The 4th wall is up! Woo-hoo!

4th wall

Here's a collage of all 4 sides.

I no longer see a surprised owl on the front. That's a very good thing!

And here's the roof and chimney - completed! Yay!!

Front

Back

I'm thrilled that it's completed. The next step, grouting, might take a while to do because I think I'll break up the task into 2-3 sessions. More photos soon!

The next project is a baby gift for an extended family member. I've painted a panel that will now get the mosaic treatment. When I do panels or larger mosaics like this, I always paint them first to give myself an idea about colors to use. Painting them keeps me focused on color and not go off into an abstract direction (my natural way to go).

Baby's last name is Fox, Mom loves owls :)

I'm using broken dishes for this panel. I'm happy to say I now love using broken dishes in my mosaics! Yay!

In The Studio - Part 1

I'm working on the birdhouse and enjoying it so very much.

wall 2 - complete
I wasn't always a fan of using broken china or dish tiles as some call them. I often call them shards because of how they break when I would try to nip them. As I've been working mostly with stained glass, I thought it was time to "face my fear" as it were and work with dishes again.

wall 3 - ready for the background fill in
An interesting thing happened about the time I finished filling in the 2nd wall. I found myself starting to really enjoy what I was doing; truly enjoying the moments I could nip up old china and broken pottery and turn it into a design on a discarded wooden birdhouse salvaged by my cousin.

wall 3 - finished
This 3rd wall took 2 days to fill in. Partly due to using such small pieces but also because I slowed up the process so I could savor every moment. I was enjoying using broken china! Wow!!

wall 4
Once I've filled in the last wall, I've got the roof to tackle. I considering adding more mosaic to the bottom platform, underneath so that it's all completely covered, but I think I'll go back to my original plan to paint it and the chimney too.

Part 2 will show the results of this pretty birdhouse filled with moons and suns completed and ready for grout. Come back to see it finished next week!

In The Studio - Part 1

It's not quite as busy this week as it has been. It's nice to go at a slower pace and enjoy what I'm working on without feeling rushed to get going on the next project right away.

I'm working on this 3 story birdhouse and enjoying it very much. Making mosaic suns and moons ALWAYS makes me happy. This house is going to be filled with them!

I still see a shocked or surprised owl when I see the sun on the front (windows are eyes, door is the shocked expression) but I'm hoping when the roof is completed and grout is applied, that imagine leaves me. It is a funny image! Can you see it?

Lots of Blue Willow is going on this mosaic. It's nice to use what I have the most of. I have been blessed with many folks remembering I like to use broken or chipped dishes in my art and many have given me their cracked and/or broken pieces. Some are tired of the set they have and offer them up to me. My friends throughout the US send me broken pottery. It's a wonderful thing!

I'm waiting for glue to dry on some new pendants I've made for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I should have used silicone adhesive to speed up the process a bit but I jumped the gun and grabbed the Weldbond (white glue that dries clear) instead.

These, once grouted in white when the glue is dry, will be available for sale through my Facebook Page for $30 a piece plus $5.95 shipping. 15% of each sale will go towards Breast Cancer Research. Message me any time to ask questions or reserve one for yourself.

Once they are grouted, I will share them here again.

In The Studio

After taking a nice "staycation" last week, I had a great week at the crafts table.

Working on many things in different stages is at times the best way to stay in the zone and keep the muse happy and productive.

I prepped:

A large birdhouse - 24 x 5 inch - and some nipped up dishes to be added to it

Grouted and listed a few on Etsy:

two sided mosaics - each side has glass and/or broken china

FB Birthstone GOG Challenge

nautical peace sign

green apple bowl

Continued with a hard project:

Mosaic Doll - I've added ball chain and white beads to face, hands and legs

she's finally ready for grout - acrylics, glitter and tempered glass added to arms and legs
And worked on something new:

ready for grout - black and white bowl
