Spring Equinox Has Arrived!

It's the first day of Spring! Yay!! 😄

Here's what the last few days have yielded.

Grouting fun happened over the weekend. I really do love grouting. It's cool to see what a difference it makes with my mosaic art.

I'm so happy with these coasters. I am hoping to do a few more sets. 🤞When I do, I'll list at least one set for sale on my website.

I wasn't going to grout this bottle; I like the way the thin set looked under the blue denim dish pieces around the middle and top. However the bottom portion was bugging me as I knew it would look better grouted. And so ...

I used black grout on the bottom, grey grout for the rest. I'm just as happy with it this way as I was before it was grouted. It is extremely heavy but balanced. Thank goodness.

And of course there's always doodles. I particularly like these:

This one was done using water color pencils (dry) and black ink

I managed to get a new water color set. I love it but have only used it once and that was just a test. The results are below in the 2nd photo.

I just dabbed a little paint on the wet paper and let it drip any way it wanted to go. Once it dried I saw a few things within the drips. Funky but fun.

I hope this Equinox brings you many new beginnings if you need it, renewal and growth if you're stuck in any situation, be it physically or mentally. I look forward to the beginnings of the new season. Seeing the trees blossom and bloom. It's a wonderful thing to watch the landscape wake up!

 Until next week ... ☮

Enjoy the journey.

Mosaic Monday

Materials:stained glass, mirror, broken mug
Dimensions: Height: 16 Inches; Width: 7 Inches

This Mid Century Modern Mosaic Wall Art has a history to it. The base is a wooden trivet, made by my Father in the late 1950's, early 1960's. The design was just starting to become known and adored and he and a friend sold many of these in NYC. The band around the top handle is real leather and the wood was cut using a lathe, sanded down and stained by my Dad. A few years ago he handed me 5 of these beauties and asked if I could use them for mosaics. The first one I made is mine to keep but a few I've decided to sell.

Done in all hand cut stained glass in brown and black and copper mirror, the center section has 2 hand cut sunflowers from a broken mug. My Dad has whittled small feet on the bottom to protect the surface of either a wall or table.

Hang on the wall, use as a candle trivet; it's up to you how you display this unusual piece of handmade artisans work. But please display it proudly!

Makes a great gift for an anniversary, wedding, new home owner, apartment dweller, college bound student, birthday, retirement and the list goes on.

Keep it and gift yourself. I absolutely believe you will smile each time you see it.

Not recommended for food or oven use.

Measures 16 inches x 7 inches.

Indoor Use Only.

$80.00 USD - FREE SHIPPING (USA ONLY)

Tesserae Tuesday

When I work on a 3D project like this birdhouse, I try to use patterns and tess that are easy for me to use. I've covered this beauty with dish tiles and mirror. The roof has ceramic tiles, the sides and bottom have dish pieces and mirror.

Here's what it says in the description on Etsy: Check out this groovy mosaic bird house! Covered in awesome hand cut dish tiles and silver mirror on all sides. Front and back have flower designs, under the tiles roof there are more hand cut dishes; even the bottom is covered. All exposed areas of wood were painted in bright blue and green.

Those who like a garden feeling within their home will love this. Great to gift to someone who has just bought a home. Birthday, wedding, anniversary, retirement, even for a children's room. It fits in wherever you need it to.

This mosaic is for decorative purposes only. Indoor uses. Not recommended for outdoors.

Measures 11 inches high by 12 inches wide from roof tip to tip.

Pretty nifty, huh?

Mosaic Monday

Materials: dish tiles, ball chain, empty wine bottle
Dimensions: Height: 13 Inches

One of my empty wine bottles has become a piece of beautiful mosaic art!

The flowers and vines climb around the bottle from the neck to the base. Done in all dish tiles, hand cut to fit, I've made something headed for the recycling bin into a piece of nifty art. The neck has some ball chain wrapped around it, topped with 3 blue pieces of square glass tiles and a flower from the dishes used on the very top. My signature peace sign has been included.

Gift it, keep it, but please enjoy it. I love taking objects headed for the recycling bin or dumpster and turning it into a mosaic.

Would make a great retirement gift, wedding gift, birthday gift, or a just because gift.

$55.00 USD - FREE SHIPPING (USA ONLY)

From The Studio - Friday

I'd like to share today the story of the gift I made for one of my longest, bestest friends for her birthday.

Meet Cactus Joe.

Joe is my friend's father, who passed away a few years ago and who made birdhouses as a hobby after retirement.

A few months ago, I came across a box filled with cards given to me through the years along with many photos from my sweet friend. These photos were of her life 3,000 miles away. In those days, between 2000-2006, we didn't have a digital footprint and instant photos came from an instant camera that used film. We still had to take it to the drug store to get copies made. The quality of these photos were usually hit or miss. Mostly miss, but they conveyed what we wanted them to, which made them good enough to share.

As I was looking through all the photos ranging from a tiny grandchild to a daughter's wedding, I found a photo of her Dad. In this photo he was under a lean to portion of a porch next to a birdhouse he made. He was standing tall and proud as he posed, showing his creativity after he installed it into a post under the lean to. This was a birdhouse my friend's mother-in-law won in a raffle through his jazz club.

I put the pictures away and put the box once more under my bed. But ... this photo never left my thoughts. It was dark and sort of out-of-focus, but I felt I had to make a mosaic using it as inspiration. Her birthday was coming up and I thought it would make an awesome gift.

I stalled out a bit with it; I needed a frame, I needed the board to work on. I needed to figure out what to use to create the mosaic: dishes or stained glass? While I played with ideas and design thoughts, she had her birthday. I hadn't even begun! Yikes!!

Shortly after that, I ordered a frame and put the photo in front of me and took a few photos of the photo, printed out an enlargement, glued it onto the board and set to work. I prefer to do a free-flowing design when I make mosaics. I seem to start off with good intentions of keeping it all within the lines but almost always the abstract portion of my brain says use color, put a swirl here, use what you have as a starting point and just go! And that's what I did.

Joe was the first thing I did on this mosaic and it was very labor intensive. I pulled tiles off, put them back, pulled them off, tried different ones until I found myself not liking anything I did. I wanted him to look exactly like the Joe in the photo which isn't how I make mosaics. Once I remembered what the muse was telling me: "flow freely", I added his shirt and it started to coming together in my head as a fairly nice looking gentleman, but perhaps not exactly like Joe.

I made the birdhouse next and had to add lots of colors and a fun star toward the top. Next came the tree which quickly turned into a cactus when I decided to paint the background to help me decide on colors to use. I could see no matter what I wanted to do to keep it "exactly" like the photo, it wasn't meant to be. I gave into the muse and went with it.

The bright colors in this mosaic reminded me of the Arizona desert, New Mexico, California. I kept thinking as I was putting down dish tiles, that it was reminiscent of a colorful blanket.

Malachi (my 10 year old grandson), thought the cactus would look cool if it had some "prickers" on it. He picked up small pieces of glass I had laying next to the mosaic, and placed them here and there on the cactus with ease. I thought it looked great but would need to be added after the mosaic was grouted. He's very proud of his contribution and I'm proud that he has an artistic flair.

After grouting, Joe came to life. I called him "Cactus Joe" because it seemed to fit. The cactus that is supposed to be a cypress tree, seemed to fit in with Joe and his birdhouse. Scrabble letters were added to make sure everyone knew who he was. I'm fairly sure if she had looked at it without an explanation, she'd have had no idea what I was trying to create for her!

I included the original photo for her to keep as a reminder and because I felt she should have it. I've kept it safe for 12 years, now she'd have a mosaic inspired by this photo and the original photo as well.

I hope she enjoys this mosaic for many years to come.

In The Studio - Wednesday

What a glorious week! I've completed my recycled mosaic as far as getting all the dish tiles and other goodies on it. It's waiting for grout. I have a large grout pile forming. It's safe to say I'll be grouting within a week or so.

Originally I had thought about putting tess on the bottom as well but it needs to be sturdy to hold a lit candle. I will share the grouting experience as I suspect it will take days.

Friday I'll be sharing the next project plus the one after that! I love being busy!!
