Wednesday - Life in the Purple Palace

In case you didn't know, the Purple Palace is actually a lovely walk-in closet within my room painted in the most glorious shade of deep purple. It was painted this color by the previous owner. I immediately knew it had to have a proper name and stay just that color. Hence: The Purple Palace Art Studio.

I've been kind of busy with the mosaic part of my life but I'm not moving quickly at all.

I started the process of cleaning every piece of tesserae I have in dishes this week. It requires a little time to dry because I don't have the space to lay them all out once they're clean. What I've been doing is weighing some pieces, trying to keep it around 5 pounds, and then getting them clean for storage and eventually selling. I really hope someone sees the value of these pieces for their own background mosaic artwork. Cross your fingers and everything else you can! I could use the space as this is under the desk of my work area where I create mosaics.

The mosaic shown below has finally moved to the grout pile. I really dig this one. It reminds me of important things in my life in this one piece of art (love when that happens!). In no particular order: pretty colors, spring flowers and FAMILY.

To keep the juices flowing between larger pieces like the one above, I pulled out some lids to mosaic. These will have either holes and a twine string for hanging or a magnet attached to the back, depending on the heaviness of the mosaic within the lid.

Other than that, there could be a spontaneous burst of energy to do something I had not planned. These bursts are always welcome and I invite them in to come play with the muse(s).

WIP Wednesday - Gazing Ball

I've been working fairly steadily on the gazing ball this week. It's coming along very nicely and should be resting in the "to be grouted" pile very soon.

It's going to look fantastic with black grout on it! Can't wait to see it become a finished mosaic. This will be available on my Etsy shop soon (this is for indoor use only due to the glue I used).

Tesserae Tuesday - Tess for the Temple

Originally I was calling the structure I'm building a shrine. Yesterday as I was putting it together to make it one piece, that little voice, my wonderful muse, said quite clearly that it's a temple. So that is now what I will call it. I never argue with the muse.

Tomorrow you'll see it all in one piece with the first layer of thin-set on it in my WIP Wednesday post. I'll be working on adding plaster cast strips to it today.

Below are the possible combinations and possibly all of the glass and dish tiles I'll use for the temple. Some may not get used. I'd rather pull out more than I need than not have the right color which is how this will go.

As of this writing, I'm only clear on a few details. The design itself is unknown. It will become clear that suns and moons and probably peace signs will be on it, I'm sure. Some cool words added. I'll be figuring it out as I'm putting the layers on the temple. Right now, all I know for sure is, it is going to be fun to create!

I often complain that I don't have enough of the right colored glass and have to get more. Right now I have more than I need but once the temple is finished, I might be saying that once more!

Mosaic Monday

Wine Bottle Mosaic Art, Blue and White, Flower with Vines, Recycled, Upcycled, Wedding, Birthday, Housewarming, Valentines Day, Mothers Day

 

Materials: dish tiles, ball chain, empty wine bottle

Dimensions: Height: 13 Inches

One of my empty wine bottles has become a piece of beautiful mosaic art!

 

The flowers and vines climb around the bottle from the neck to the base. Done in all dish tiles, hand cut to fit, I've made something headed for the recycling bin into a piece of nifty art. The neck has some ball chain wrapped around it, topped with 3 blue pieces of square glass tiles and a flower from the dishes used on the very top. My signature peace sign has been included.

Gift it, keep it, but please enjoy it. I love taking objects headed for the recycling bin or dumpster and turning it into a mosaic.

Would make a great retirement gift, wedding gift, birthday gift, or a just because gift.

Throwback Thursday

Charolette's Wonder Woman Shoe! I made this 6 inch x 4 inch mosaic in July of 2018 using a shoe whose mate was chewed by a pup. It was a soft ballet type of shoe so I used plaster cast strips on it so it wouldn't sink by the weight of the mosaic.

Making a small Wonder Woman logo was a bit of a challenge but I always see these as a learning experience. I used stained glass and mirror and mesh which was cut out and glued to the shoe.

After the logo was glued on, I started filling in the shoe using dish tiles in red, blue, yellow and mirror for the bottom.

Grouted in black. I think it turned out pretty cool. I took these photos today. Two years later, it still looks good!

Tesserae Tuesday

Last week, I shared some of my favorite tesserae. I use so many different things, I decided to break it up into two posts.

I left off with: My favorite tesserae is whatever I'm using at the moment. I love dish tiles when I'm using them as much as I love stained glass when I'm using it. Mirror is a favorite as well.


Dish Tiles:

"Cactus Joe" - a birthday gift for a good friend

Spring-themed decorative birdhouse using dishes, an old flower brooch and some Mardi Gras beads

Recycled:

An old jug found at a thrift store using hand cut mirror and stained glass

Broken Mirror:

Stained glass, dish tiles and mirror were used for this wedding gift

Tempered/Crash Glass:

Tempered glass or crash glass as some call it was used on top of colorful foils. I added glitter. This was the start of a beautiful friendship using tempered glass, paint and glitter. The love continues to grow to this day.

As you can see by these examples, there are so many ways to create mosaics. I've had some fail horribly but most of the time, when I experiment, I am usually pleased with the results. This particular piece of art isn't a mosaic but was an experiment. It's called "A Dreamer's Fleeting Moments" and is done with tempered glass, beads, found objects, mixed media, paper, pens, paint and glitter.

The best part about this: it's done on a piece of Styrofoam that came out of a packing box. I covered it in many layers of thinset (cement).
