In The Studio - Friday

I've been so busy this week now that I'm feeling better, that I completely forgot to write a post on Wednesday! I went straight to work on the newest mosaic, a hurricane lamp shade done in light tan, stones, blue/green and bright blue.

I had a big day on Thursday and spent 3 hours grouting. It's exhausting work but so worth it.

This cross is getting listed today. I'm very pleased with this one. It's #24 of 25 crosses which means the journey is almost over! I won't purchase a lot of crosses again unless it's for a custom order. Love the colors I used, the focal too. One more to go!

The Meditation Shrine is almost finished. I grouted it and have a lot of cleaning to do but I'm so happy with it. The wording around the outside is sort of hard to read but I'm not too worried about that. This is for me only and I know what they say!

Whew! It has been a great week, even though it started out rough. I'm feeling 100% better and ready to get into the next project!

Flower Mosaic Vase - 7 Inches

This is such a pretty mosaic vase. From top to bottom this mosaic is filled with hand cut pieces. The flower design is surrounded by ball chain, the center focal piece is from an old Depression glass plate. The vase is covered in stained glass in shades of blue-green and purple.

 

 

 

 

The light play from sun or candlelight is intense and truly quite beautiful. Flowers look beautiful in this vase or it can sit on a shelf or windowsill and shine on it's own. Grouted in a blue grout called "Starry Night".

In The Studio - Friday

It's the end of the week and I've been sick through most of it. This is the time of year where I am prone to get strep throat, sinus infections and ear infections due to allergies. This year is no different. I've got a doozy of a sinus infection and allergies have played havoc with my eyes this time. That slowed me down with all I had planned for this week and has been added to the list for next week.

I did move some things around midweek and noticed a pair of masks I made in 2010 all wrapped up and protected in a box. I made both masks to be venetian/carnival/mardi gras inspired. These masks were for a gallery in Muncie, IN which is no longer open called Art & Soul at Phoebe's Gallery. The display was all masks.

I thought it would be kind of cool to show how I made them because I used recycled plastic containers! The black mask was cut from a plastic iced tea jug. The white mask was cut from a green 2-liter bottle. Both were covered generously with plaster cast strips.

I let them sit overnight to make sure the plaster was completely dry. Next step was to paint each mask and add some glitter. Fun!!

Now onto the mosaic magic.

And lastly, grout to finish them off nicely.

Each were embellished with tempered glass, iridescent stained glass and mirror. Green Van Gogh stained glass was added to the white mask. Adornments like broken jewelry, plastic beads, and ribbon were added.

I painted the backs of each and signed them.

Here they all displayed in the gallery (I know they are hard to spot, but they are there!). They are placed in the front. White one on the left, black on the right.

In The Studio - Wednesday

Finding the right substrates to put mosaics on has never been much of a problem for me. It seems I am blessed to have people in my life throughout the US who think of me when they are cleaning out their closets or break a dish. I'm very lucky!

While looking through my stash to see what "speaks" to me, I found some really fun things. Some are new, some are old, but they are all waiting for some mosaic magic.

The design on this is along the outside of the plate. My hope is to follow it using some pretty colors in stained glass.

We got a new microwave recently, so I have a new glass plate to mosaic! Yay!!

I've been doing some final touches on a few things I've had sitting here for a while. I put bails on these crosses and will get hangers on them. I hope to get them photographed and listed before the end of the week.

Mid Century Modern Mosaic Wood Wall Hanging, Blue and White - 16 x 7 Inches - $160.00

Blue and white stained glass hand cut to fit a wooden trivet wall hanging made by my father in the 1950's. Mid Century Modern in shape and design. Blue and white flowers in the center. A small piece of rawhide is added to the top for hanging. Grouted in white.

The bottom has 3 hand whittled pegs to keep from hitting the wall when hung and to protect furniture when placed on a table. This can be used to hold a few glasses or a candle or two. Not recommended for food.

We love it as wall art and think it's best hanging in a kitchen or entryway. Perfect gift for newlyweds or newly retired. Measures 16 x 7 Inches.
