I've only got a few left, but more will be added as soon as I can get to them. Here are 2 nifty looking mosaic suns from my Etsy shop.
Abstract in design, there are flowers and a sun added in mirror, stained
glass and dish tiles. All hand cut to fit. I drew some random circles
and the sun on this frame and added glass gems to some of the dots. From
there, it turned into flowers and a sun. Abstract designs are the most
fun to do because they can turn into just about anything or nothing at
all and still be cool looking. This frame can be flipped in 4 directions

One of the things I love the most about using Styrofoam is how lightweight it is and yet very sturdy most times. For my shrine, however, I need to make sure it will hold the pieces I've used to build it. To begin with, I taped the pieces, crudely cut in some instances (which I LOVE!) together to make pillars and the base.
You may have seen this in previous posts but I'm sharing as the "before" photo because once completed with mosaic magic, it will still have the same shape but look completely different.
I don't want to leave it all taped up and assume that will hold heavy tess and grout. What's needed is some layers of thin-set and plaster cast strips to bond things together and make it one piece instead of many pieces taped together.
I like using thin-set mortar for some things, especially if it should have strength to it. I mixed some of this up and used it in the joints.
I buttered it on the pieces and stuck them together. The color turns white when it's completely dry.
The circles and oblong indentations will also get some thin-set on them to make this as flat a surface as possible.
Here are the pillars, looking rather weird at the moment. They will get covered in thin-set and attached to the top and bottom parts soon.
After all the pieces are attached, I'll use plaster cast strips to cover the whole thing and once that's dry, I'll put more thin-set on it. Then it'll be ready for the fun stuff. The mosaic!
I'll share step-by-step how I do this as the weeks progress. This is going to be a fun side project in between making mosaics for my Etsy shop.

It's now time to start thinking about filling up my shop with favorites for my customers for the upcoming holiday season. Many love the peace signs I mosaic, so I thought I'd start with one this week.
The flower brooch in the center will be added once the mosaic is grouted. This has a nice soft look to it.
I hand cut all the pieces I use and filled the peace sign up with them. It didn't take long to get it finished and ready for the grout pile!
I'm grouting this in white because I think it has a shabby chic look to it. Once it's had grout and finishing touches around the sides and back, I'll add the brooch to it and get some photos to list it on Etsy.

Mid Century Modern Mosaic Wall Art
Materials: stained glass, dish tiles
Dimensions: Height: 7 Inches; Width: 16 Inches
This Mid Century Modern Mosaic Wall Art has a history to it. The base is a wooden trivet, made by my Father in the late 1950's, early 1960’s. The design was just starting to become known and adored and he and a friend sold many of these in NYC. The band around the top handle is real leather and the wood was cut using a lathe, sanded down and stained by my Dad. A few years ago he handed me 5 of these beauties and asked if I could use them for mosaics. The first one I made is mine to keep but a few I've decided to sell.
Done in all hand cut blue stained glass in varying degrees of color, the center section has 4 hand cut flowers from a favorite set of dishes I like to use in my mosaics. My Dad has whittled small feet on the bottom to protect the surface of either a wall or table.
Hang on the wall, use as a candle trivet; it's up to you how you display this unusual piece of handmade artisans work. But please display it proudly!
Makes a great gift for an anniversary, wedding, new home owner, apartment dweller, college bound student, birthday, retirement and the list goes on.
Keep it and gift yourself. I absolutely believe you will smile each time you see it.
Not recommended for food or oven use. Indoor use only.
